EXAMPLE RESEARCH NOTE / RECEPTION

When critics and
players diverge.

This is an illustrative analysis of Datawyrm’s working collection, not a client engagement or a completed research finding. It shows how a broad question becomes a transparent, reproducible shortlist for further investigation.

The question

Among games with a relatively high collected critic mean, which have the largest gap between critic and user sample means? A studio could use this first pass to identify reception patterns worth studying before selecting meaningful comparables.

The selection

Start with the 81 title folders in the collection. Require a critic sample mean of at least 80/100, at least 25 critic rows, at least 50 user rows, and no invalid numeric values flagged by the import. That leaves 21 titles. Sort by critic mean minus ten times user mean, and show the five largest positive differences.

Collected sample means; different scales aligned only for the descriptive gap.

What this shows

These titles have different critic and user sample means under the stated selection rule. The gap is a descriptive signal to investigate. It is not a measure of commercial success, audience size, review bombing, or product quality.

What a studio or publisher should investigate next

Limits of the evidence

The scores are unweighted means of collected rows, not official aggregate scores. The critic and user groups are different samples. Multiplying the user scale by ten does not establish equal measurement properties. The collection is selective, capture timing remains unverified, and duplicates, platform eligibility, and sampling completeness still need review. This screening deliberately emphasizes large differences, so it cannot estimate the typical gap across the industry.

A useful commissioned deliverable

A scoped Game Landscape Report would start from your decision, establish the comparison criteria, verify the necessary data, and pair findings with their evidence and limitations. The deliverable could combine a written report, annotated game shortlist, and an interactive view.
